A consultant creates deliverables for hire. A truly knowledgeable consultant in your area will make valuable strategic recommendations for what makes the most sense for your business. Most often, they conduct market research, analyze markets and strategies, construct marketing plans, prepare PR and advertising  communications plans, create promotional pieces, execute sales and marketing strategies, and act as your partners in increasing sales on your behalf.  They are most often paid based on the scope of the work by project, although some hourly rates may apply. We negotiate fees by project up front and there are no hidden costs. You’ll know exactly what you are going to get and how much it will cost.

A mentor is an experienced person who gives advice, usually with expertise in the same area of business as yours.  A mentor is willing to guide you through critical decisions as you build your company. They have usually been in business for a considerable time and are often retired and wish to pass on their knowledge. They do not write marketing plans. They do not create advertising or business plans. They do not contract for deliverables. What mentors do is provide a sounding board for your ideas and advice when it is asked for. They do not make your decisions for you, but rather they help you work through your problems so you can make more informed decisions on your own. After all, it is your business and they cannot tell you how to run it. They can give you the benefit of their experience in similar situations. They can also introduce you to others who can help you, both mentors and consultants, and they can open doors through their connections. To have an effective mentoring relationship takes a two way partnership, with the mentee responsible for requesting assistance when needed and the mentor making time available to provide it. Mentors are often compensated for their time on an hourly basis. If expenses are incurred for out-of-pocket costs such as travel on behalf of the mentee or to the mentees offices, those are often negotiated into an agreement in advance.
